When a cat starts pooping on the floor, it’s usually a signal that something about the litter box setup, the cat’s health, or the household routine has changed. Cats are creatures of habit, so a sudden shift often points to discomfort, stress, or an environment that no longer feels “right” to them.
Cats may avoid a box that’s too dirty, too small, hard to access, or placed in a noisy/high-traffic area. Covered boxes can trap odors, and some cats dislike liners. Even the wrong depth of litter can be a deal-breaker.
A new litter type (especially strongly scented formulas) can trigger avoidance. Many cats prefer unscented, fine-grain litter. If you recently switched brands or textures, she may be choosing the floor instead.
Constipation, diarrhea, arthritis, intestinal parasites, and anal gland discomfort can make using the box unpleasant or urgent. If she seems to strain, cries, has blood/mucus, or has changes in stool frequency/consistency, a vet visit is important.
New pets, visitors, construction noise, moving furniture, or a change in schedule can lead to elimination outside the box. Multi-cat tension is a frequent trigger—one cat may “guard” the box, pushing another to avoid it.
A good rule is one box per cat plus one extra, spread across different locations. If the only box is upstairs, behind a closed door, or near a loud appliance, your cat may choose the closest quiet spot instead.
Start by cleaning accidents thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner, then improve the litter box setup: scoop daily, wash the box regularly, use unscented litter, and offer an uncovered, appropriately sized box in a calm area. If the behavior is new, persistent, or paired with other symptoms, schedule a veterinary check to rule out health causes. For a deeper walkthrough of causes and fixes, see the full guide here: Why is my cat pooping on the floor and not in her litter box?
Use an enzymatic cleaner to remove all odor, block access temporarily (box, runner, or furniture), and add a litter box closer to that area. Once she’s reliably using the box, gradually move it to your preferred location.
